    Student Council

A student council is a group of students who are elected to represent their peers in school government and organize activities. Student councils are found in most public and private schools, from elementary to high school, and in many universities.

Student councils have many purposes, including:
    Student voice

Student councils act as a liaison between students and the administration, giving students a platform to share their concerns and ideas.

    Leadership development

Students can develop leadership skills by organizing and carrying out activities and service projects.

    Community engagement

Student councils can promote citizenship and encourage students to be responsible members of their community.

    Democracy education

Student councils can help students learn about democracy and leadership.
Student councils are made up of elected and volunteer students, and are usually advised by an adult. Each school and district has a student council handbook that includes the council’s constitution, rules, and regulations.
